Topical Platforms

Four day-long platforms discuss the different aspects of limits. Each platform focuses on one particular field of research.

Dialogue between research and reality: how to overcome limits
Besides the three actual topics of environmental protection “Protection of marshland”, “Wolf”, “Elimination of protected areas” SWIFCOB 4 discusses in detail questions, which emerge in between research and reality: Which recommendations can research offer? Can they be put into reality or not? The presentations given by experts of practice and research are directed to researchers and environmental experts from administration, engineering and environmental agencies as well as organisations of the protection of nature.
Place Herrenhaus Grafenort
Organisation SWIFCOB 4: Swiss Forum on Conversation Biology
Irene Künzle, Forum Biodiversität Schweiz, Bärenplatz 2, CH-3011 Bern
  Front of research and nanotechnology
Three main presentation, “Smaller and smaller – limits of the nanotechnology today”, “Pushing limits: Nano and Bio: Learning from the nature” and “Nanotechnology = progress without limits?” introduce the topic, followed by a discussion panel. Demonstration at the CSEM Alpnach.
Place Pfarreizentrum Alte Post, CH-6055 Alpnach
Organisation Dr. Karl Knop, CSEM: Swiss Centre of Electronics and Microtechnique
Limits in regard with natural dangers
Natural dangers often limit the human use of space. Five presentations “Limits of feasability”, “Limits of judgement”, “Social limits”, “Comparison with other cultures” and “Swiss strategies in dealing with natural dangers” introduce the topic in the morning. In the afternoon these topics are being discussed in detail in workshops with the use of case studies (mudflow and landslides Sörenberg, earthquake Nidwalden).
Place BWZ/Kantonsschule, CH-6060 Sarnen
Organisation Dr. Christoph Hegg, WSL, CH-8903 Birmensdorf und Schweizerische Geomorphologische Gesellschaft
What can integrative computer models offer for the development of settlements?

Models, which can help to make decisions with regard to the development of agglomerations, must fulfil different needs. Besides offering an integrative consideration of a problem the responsible protagonists (administration, engineering agencies, ...) must be able to use them and the models have to answer the needs of science and research in giving relevant answers to questions. The workshop offers a dialogue between science and research in regard to the different needs and tries to solve the tensions between the two fields.

Place Kollegium Stans, CH-6370 Stans
Organisation Schweizerische Akademische Gesellschaft für Umweltforschung (SAGUF): Ruth Förster, Susanne Kytzia, Markus Maibach, Christian Pohl
